Cyprus Court Says No to Former Judge

The top court in Cyprus made a decision on Friday. They said no to a former judge, Doria Varoshiotou. She wanted to go back to her job as a judge. But the court said she will not. Five judges agreed. Three judges did not agree.

This court decision is the same as an earlier one. A different group, the Supreme Judicial Council, also said she could not be a judge. They removed her from the job.

Ms. Varoshiotou did not become a permanent judge. She worked for two years to show she was good at her job. The council looked at her work. They said her work and behavior were not good. Reports said she made big mistakes.

Her lawyer will now go to a court in Europe. He wants to see if human rights were broken. He said justice can be found in other countries.

The court said judges need to be smart and have good character. Ms. Varoshiotou knew about her test time. She agreed to the rules.

This case is important for how judges are chosen. It shows the court has a strict way to pick judges. Ms. Varoshiotou cannot be a judge in Cyprus now. But Europe might look at the case.
