Farmers Protest New Trade Deal

Cypriot farmers will protest on Saturday. They are worried about a new trade deal. This deal is between the EU and Mercosur. Farmers worry about food safety. They also worry about local farms. They think the deal will hurt their jobs. It may also hurt food quality.

MEP George Georgiou said the deal is a danger. He thinks it will stop traditional foods. Farmers agree with him. The farmers' union president, Michalis Lytras, said it is a threat.

The protest will start at Eleftheria Square. It will go to the Presidential Palace. Farmers will have a press conference first. They will explain their worries. The deal is unfair, they say.

They expect cheap food from other countries. This will hurt local farming. It could be bad for health. Quality rules might get weaker. People worry food quality will go down. Famous foods like halloumi may be hurt.

Groups like the European Left support farmers. They want Europe to care about health. Farmers are determined to show their disagreement.
