Military Takes Control in Guinea-Bissau

The military in Guinea-Bissau has taken power. They removed President Umaro Sissoco Embaló on Wednesday. They also stopped all government work and closed the country's borders.

A general spoke on television. He said the military acted to stop problems with the election results. He said some politicians wanted to cause trouble. Soldiers were seen near important buildings in the capital city.

This is not the first time this has happened. Guinea-Bissau has had many military takeovers since 1974. The country is very poor and has problems with drug trafficking.

But not everyone believes the military's story. Opposition groups say the president may have planned this. They think he wanted an excuse to cancel the election because he might lose. Both the president and the main opposition candidate say they won the vote.

Other countries and African groups are very worried. They told the military to free the president and return power. The military now says it will control the country for the next year. The future is very uncertain.
