Cyprus Has a Water Problem

Cyprus is an island in the Mediterranean Sea. The weather is changing. It is getting warmer and drier.

Scientists say Cyprus is getting hotter very fast. It is now much warmer in months like March and November than before. A scientist said this November felt like September.

There is also much less rain. The rain that does fall is different. Now, there are short, very heavy storms instead of gentle rain all day. This heavy rain runs away quickly and does not fill the underground water.

Now, the island's water is very low. The big lakes that store water are only 9.5% full. An engineer warned the country could have no water left by 2026 if no rain comes.

Cyprus now uses desalination plants for most of its water. These plants take salt out of sea water, but they use a lot of energy and are expensive.

Scientists think Cyprus will become even drier in the future, like Cairo. People will need more water to stay cool because the hot weather will last longer. The island must find ways to save water.
