Cyprus Needs More Water

Cyprus has a big water problem. It is strange because much rain is wasted. Dams are only 12% full. The government will buy more water. Summer may have water limits.

Heavy rain, like from Storm Byron, shows we do not save water. After the rain, Cyprus lost much water. This water could fill our dams. Cities drain water fast. New buildings have hard surfaces. Rain goes into drains quickly. It does not fill our dams. This is bad for dry Cyprus.

President Nikos Christodoulides said water is important. The country will spend much money in 2026. This is for buying special water. This costs more than last year. It takes money from saving water.

Water managers know levels are low. They want to stop water limits. Officials check rules for wells. They worry about underground water use.

Much rainwater is lost. Paved areas lose many litres yearly. This is very wasteful. We need more water. Cyprus must plan better for the future. Rain is a resource.
