Cyprus Needs More Water

Cyprus has very little water in its dams. The winter rain was not enough. So, the government will use more special plants. These plants make sea water into fresh water.

Cyprus will build more of these plants. This is important for drinking water. But, farmers will have less water. People in towns by the sea are worried. They worry about nature.

The government will spend money on water. They will spend €196 million by 2026. Most of this money is for the special plants. They want twelve plants working by summer. Nine are working now. Three more will come soon.

These plants will give Cyprus most of its drinking water. This is the plan for enough water. But, this plan is not good for farms.

Farmers will get much less water. This can hurt their plants and trees. A farmer said this. He also said water will be very costly.

Animals on farms also have problems. Farmers cannot grow food for them. This is bad for cheese. Cheese is a big thing Cyprus sells.

Farmers wanted the government to do this before. They think it is too late now.

A new plant is also a problem. People near it worry about the sea. They fear harm to sea animals. This is a problem. We need water but must also help nature.

People in Cyprus might use less water at home. They may lose some water next summer. This is on top of less water for farms. The next months will be hard.
