Trump Talks to Leaders of Venezuela and Ukraine

This week, President Donald Trump said he spoke on the phone with Nicolás Maduro. This is surprising because the US government does not recognize Maduro as Venezuela's leader. The US supports a different man, Juan Guaidó. The US also has strong sanctions against Maduro's government.

At the same time, President Trump talked about the war between Russia and Ukraine. US and Ukrainian officials had a long meeting in Florida. After the meeting, Trump said he thinks both Russia and Ukraine want to end the war. He said he is hopeful for a peace agreement.

However, Trump also connected the peace talks to a corruption problem in Ukraine. He said this investigation is bad for negotiations. This adds a new difficulty to the talks.

These two events show President Trump's way of dealing with other countries. He often talks directly to foreign leaders himself. This is different from the usual way governments talk to each other.
