A very large fire happened in a public housing area in Hong Kong. It was in the Tai Po district. The fire started on Wednesday afternoon. It burned for more than one day. At least 75 people died, and 76 people were hurt. This is the worst fire in Hong Kong in over 70 years.
The fire spread quickly because the buildings were covered in plastic and foam for repairs. This material burns very easily. The fire was very dangerous for firefighters. One firefighter died, and ten were hurt. Firefighters worked very hard and saved 55 people.
Police arrested three people from the building company. They think the company was very careless. The leader of Hong Kong said they will check all buildings with similar repairs. They also want to stop using bamboo scaffolding.
People who lived there are very sad and angry. Some people said the fire alarms did not work. One woman could not escape because the stairs were full of smoke. The fire shows there were big safety problems.
