Honduras Holds Important Election

People in Honduras voted for a new president this Saturday. The election was very important for the country's future. But before the vote, former U.S. President Donald Trump made some surprising comments.

He said the United States would only give more money to Honduras if his favorite candidate won. His favorite was the right-wing candidate, Nasry "Tito" Asfura. Trump also said he might pardon a former Honduran president. That former president is in prison in the U.S. for drug crimes.

The other main candidates were Rixi Moncada from the ruling party and centrist Salvador Nasralla. The race was very close.

On election day, voting was mostly calm. However, the ruling party said it only trusted the official paper count. This showed some people were worried about the results.

Trump's comments made the election more complicated. Critics say his words hurt Honduras's right to choose its own leaders. Now, the winner will have to deal with a difficult relationship with the United States. The future of important U.S. aid is now unclear.
