Forest Department Has Problems

A new report looks at forest land in Cyprus. It found many problems. This happened from 2018 to 2024. The report shows issues with land use. It also found €1.3 million not collected. These problems make people ask questions.

The Auditor General is Andreas Papaconstantinou. He said the findings are "concerning." He thinks the department needs changes. The report talked about land use changes. One park lease became twice as big. The government agreed to this. But the company asked for more land late. The company did not build on the land. The department did not see this.

The report also looked at special areas. Macheras National Forest Park is one. A lease was given there. The department did not think about a snake. This snake lives in the park. The company's report did not mention the snake. This shows a problem with checking nature.

Money problems are also big. By December 2023, over €1.3 million was not collected. This is money lost for everyone. The department is not managing money well. Old problems are still here. The Audit Office wants better rules. They want better checks for nature and money.
