Cyprus Peace Talks: Little Progress

The UN envoy, Maria Angela Holguin, spoke about Cyprus peace talks. She said there has been little progress. Real peace talks cannot start again because of this. Holguin met leaders on the island. The meetings showed big differences.

Ms. Holguin wants to help solve the problem. She met President Nikos Christodoulides. She also met Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman. Then, both leaders met with Holguin. They talked about starting negotiations.

Leaders talked about their worries. They discussed the future. They also talked about confidence-building steps. Mr. Erhürman gave a proposal. Everyone looked at it.

The UN envoy was clear. She said, "Not much progress so far." There was no real movement. She hopes leaders can "deliver something." This shows they need to act fast.

Little progress stops a big UN conference. This conference would have other countries. People hoped January meetings would help. Both leaders must show they want to move forward. This is important for future talks.
