Former Cyprus President George Vassiliou Dies

George Vassiliou, a former president of Cyprus, died this week. He was 94 years old. He was the third president of the country.

A big funeral was held for him. It had military honours. Many important people and citizens came. They wanted to say goodbye to him. The state paid for the funeral.

His coffin was carried on a special cart. It had the Cyprus flag on it. A gun salute was fired. The national song played. People could see his coffin before the funeral. They paid their respects.

George Vassiliou was president from 1988 to 1993. He made big changes. He helped the economy and the government. He also helped start a new university.

The current president, Nikos Christodoulides, spoke at the funeral. He said Vassiliou was strong. His wife also spoke. Many guests came to honor him.
