Former US President Donald Trump says he will free the former leader of Honduras from prison. The ex-leader, Juan Orlando Hernández, is in a US jail for 45 years because of drugs and weapons crimes.
Trump wrote about his plan on social media. He said Hernández was treated badly and unfairly. This is very different from what US lawyers said in court. They said Hernández took millions of dollars in bribes to help drug traffickers. They said he helped move huge amounts of cocaine to the United States.
Trump made this announcement just before a big election in Honduras. He also said he supports a conservative candidate in that election, named Nasry "Tito" Asfura. Trump said the US will only help Honduras if this candidate wins. If the "wrong leader" is chosen, the US will not help.
Hernández was a close partner to Trump when he was US president. This promise to free him is surprising because Trump often said he was very tough on drug crime. People are now watching to see how this will change the election and the relationship between the two countries.
