Cyprus Talks About MP Special Rights

Nikos Sykas, a deputy, had an event. This started a talk about MP special rights in Cyprus. People want to change the rules.

MPs have special protection. They cannot be punished for what they say in parliament. But, to take legal action, the Supreme Court must say yes. This is slow.

Now, the attorney-general needs permission to ask an MP questions. This is hard and slow. People are not happy. They think some people are above the law. MPs have used their rights before. This made people worry more.

It is hard to change this. There were tries in 2012 and 2016. Changes in 2021 did not pass.

Now, groups are talking about new rules. They look at other countries. But changing the constitution needs many politicians to agree. This is hard.

Not changing this hurts trust. People feel MPs are not like others. This is bad for democracy. People want the rules changed. They want everyone to be fair.
